SG heavy social media users face body image anxiety

Nearly 20 per cent of adults in Singapore are potentially at risk of body image anxiety, according to our survey, which scored respondents using the Appearance Anxiety Inventory assessment scale, an established psychometric assessment in psychology. They tend to be females, and aged 16 to 24 years old.

Those anxious about their body image were also more likely to be influenced by celebrities, particularly Korean personalities and social media influencers.

The survey was conducted with 2,670 respondents in Singapore from May to June 2022, to explore the relationship between social media usage and mental health.
